What the evidence adds up to

A 1978 case report describes a patient thought to have a uterine polyp protruding through the cervix; the mass was later identified as a Fallopian tube that had been pulled into the uterus through a fundal perforation caused by a curettage performed ten months earlier.

A 2015 case study reports a 42-year-old woman diagnosed with a uterine polyp who was treated with Kanchanar guggulu, an Ayurvedic preparation described as having tumour-destroying properties. The authors state that considerable improvement in symptoms was observed after treatment, but they provide no objective measurements, no imaging follow-up, and no control comparison.

A 2018 case report describes a 41-year-old woman with a 10 mm uterine polyp, infertility, and irregular periods who received 14 acupuncture sessions over four months. After the fourth treatment her periods became regular, and after the fourteenth treatment the polyp was reported to be gone. The report is a single case with no blinding, no sham control, and no long-term follow-up.

No randomised trials, no controlled studies, and no data on recurrence rates exist for any non-surgical treatment of uterine polyps. What is missing is funding for properly blinded trials, standardised outcome measures such as ultrasound-confirmed polyp resolution, and patient stratification by polyp size, number, and hormonal status.

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF UTERINE POLYP: A CASE STUDY

AbstractUterine polyps are growths attached to the inner walls of uterus that extend into the cavity. Although the exact cause of the overgrowth of the endometrial mucosa i.e. uterine polyp is unknown but hormonal factors appear to play a major role. Uterine polyps are estrogen sensitive. They respond the circulatory estrogen by growing in size. It commonly occurs in women > 40years. The sign and symptoms include irregular menstrual bleeding like having frequent, unpredictable periods of variable length and heaviness, bleeding between menstrual periods and excessively heavy menstrual periods and also vaginal white discharge. All these symptoms and signs related to uterine polyps have a vast opportunity to study them treatment wise. The treatment offered by Modern science is variable according to severity of the disease and age of the patient. Polypectomy and Hysterectomy are the choice of the treatment of most of the gynecologists. Whichever method is used, polyps are usually treated under general anesthesia in Modern science. In this case study, 42 year female was diagnosed as having uterine polyp. In Ayurveda it resembles with Yonyarsha which occurs due to vitiated rakta and mansa of yoni, producing umbrella shaped muscular sprouts. This patient was treated with Kanchanar guggulu as aabhyantar Chikitsa which has property to destroy tumor growth (granthi-arbuda nashaka) and considerable improvement was observed in the symptoms after completion of the treatment. Kanchanar guggulu can help uterine polyp conditions a great deal and can focus light on clinical aspect of uterine polyp.

Acupuncture Treatment in Patient with Uterine Polyp

AbstractUterine polyps are benign growths on the inner wall of the uterus, which extend into the uterine cavity. Excessive growth of the mucous membrane of the uterus (endometrium) leads to the formation of polyps on the uterus. Uterine polyps are usually non-cancerous (benign), although some may be carcinogenic or possibly develop over time into cancer. Polyps can be divided into two groups: endo-cervical polyps and endometrial polyps. Uterine polyps most commonly occur in women who undergo menopause or are in postmenopausal period, although polyps may occur in younger women too. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the cause for uterine polyps is usually a combination of Blood deficiency, Blood stagnation and Liver/Kidney Deficiency. The aim of the treatment is to move the blood, to make the blood flow free and smooth, resolve the dampness, resolve the blood stagnation, treat the underlying deficiencies and etc. The treated patients is 41 year old woman, diagnosed with 10 mm uterine polyp. The patient was also diagnosed with infertility and was having irregular periods. The patient was treated with acupuncture in a clinic for TCM and acupuncture in Skopje. In a period of 4 months, 14 treatments were made, indoor, on a room temperature, with duration of the treatments of 30-45 minutes. After the 4th treatment her period was regularized and after 14 treatments the polyp was gone. Acupuncture as a treatment for uterine polyps is safe and effective treatment and gave very satisfying and positive results in our treated patient.
