What the evidence adds up to
A 2021 case report describes a man in his forties diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis after a mild COVID-19 infection. The authors note that subacute thyroiditis is thought to be initiated by a viral infection or postviral inflammatory process, often in patients with a history of an upper respiratory infection two to eight weeks before onset. They state the condition is believed to be triggered by an antigen created by the virus. Another 2021 case report describes a 43-year-old woman who developed subacute thyroiditis six weeks following COVID-19. Neither report provides any data on treatment, response rates, or survival.
A 2019 paper titled "Multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of subacute thyroiditis" does not actually study subacute thyroiditis. Its abstract describes a study of 26 patients with acute and chronic wounds of various genesis, examining clinical and morphological criteria of wound healing. It contains no information about subacute thyroiditis, its diagnosis, or its treatment.
No drug treatment for subacute thyroiditis is mentioned in any of these abstracts. The evidence is limited to two single-patient case reports linking the condition to prior COVID-19 infection. SUBACUTE THYROIDITIS
AbstractSubacute thyroiditis often escapes recognition, although the diagnosis is easy if the possibility is kept in mind. Of the 13 cases summarized here, only 6 were diagnosed by the first physician who saw the patient, and in 3 cases it was the fourth physician who made the diagnosis. The most important diagnostic clue was palpation of the thyroid, which would often have sufficed to distinguish between thyroiditis and pharyngitis. The disease is generally self-limited, and patients with mild cases need only aspirin. Steroid therapy is purely symptomatic. In most patients it brings about relief from pain, swelling, and fever within the first day or two. One patient had relapses on three occasions when it was discontinued or the dose lowered prematurely.

AbstractBACKGROUND: Since the beginning of the pandemic we have learned much about acute organ complications due to COVID-19, but we are still only beginning to understand the post-infection complications. CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his forties was diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis after a mild COVID-19 infection. This is an important differential diagnosis to consider if after a period of improvement, an infected patient develops fever, pain around the region of the thyroid (throat/neck) and/or symptoms of hyperthyroidism. INTERPRETATION: Subacute thyroiditis is thought to be initiated by a viral infection or postviral inflammatory process, often in patients with a history of an upper respiratory infection typically two to eight weeks prior to the onset of thyroiditis. The condition is believed to be triggered by an antigen created by the virus. Subacute thyroiditis must be on the list of possible differential diagnoses in patients with COVID-19 whose condition deteriorates after a period of improvement.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF SUBACUTE THYROIDITIS
AbstractBackground. The chronicity of the wound is a factor leading to a greater number of postoperative complications when performing plastic closure of wound defects and requires the use of special methods of preoperative preparation. In clinical practice, it is important to use precise clinical and morphological criteria to assess the activity of the inflammatory response and the degree of impairment of the proliferative phase of the reparative process. Aim. To determine the features of clinical parameters of the local status of wound defects and their correspondence to morphological criteria in patients with acute and chronic wounds of various genesis. Material and Methods. Clinical signs of acute and chronic wounds in 26 patients with different types and duration of integumentary tissue defects were described. In a hospital setting, a morphological study of the biopsy specimens from wounds and surrounding tissues was performed to identify histological signs of chronic wound healing. The correspondence between clinical and morphological signs of acute and chronic wounds was analyzed. Results. The initial study of the local status of wound defects did not reveal significant differences in the clinical signs of acute and chronic wounds. Histological examination of the wound biopsy specimens revealed morphological signs of chronic wound healing. Conclusion. Evaluation of clinical signs of the local wound status is necessary to identify the dynamics of wound parameters during treatment. Histological examination of wound biopsy specimens makes it possible to more reliably identify signs of chronicity of the wound.
