What the evidence adds up to
A 2015 review of PresbyLASIK surgical approaches for presbyopia found that additional trials and standards for reporting results are necessary, and that careful patient selection and counselling is imperative in all PresbyLASIK treatments. A 2024 article on presbyopia correction surgery notes ongoing innovations in surgical mechanisms and methods but states that significant issues remain unresolved, aiming to provide guidance for improving safety, efficacy, practicality, and longevity of these procedures in line with natural aging processes. A 2021 article clarifies that presbyopia is the consequence of the slow and progressive universal decline in the amplitude of accommodation with age, and will eventually affect everyone.
A 2011 cross-sectional study of 298 public senior high school teachers in Kumasi, Ghana, found a presbyopia prevalence of 68.1%. Among the presbyopes, 29.6% did not have presbyopic correction. Of those with correction, 55.5% used single vision correction and 44.5% used bifocals; 6% of those who had had their presbyopia corrected before were not wearing their correction. A 1985 study of 1,362 presbyopic patients in Benin-City, Nigeria, compared bifocal adds with published data from other areas and suggested that climatic temperature has less effect on the age of onset of presbyopia than other authors have claimed. A 2014-2015 study in Birjand, Iran, evaluated the relationship between presbyopia and presbycusis (age-related hearing loss) but no quantitative results from that study are provided in the available abstracts.
What is still missing is standardised reporting for surgical outcomes, prospective trials comparing different PresbyLASIK modalities with adequate follow-up, and studies that stratify patients by baseline accommodative amplitude, refractive error, and age to identify who benefits from which intervention. No pharmacological treatment for presbyopia is mentioned in these abstracts.

PresbyLASIK approach for the correction of presbyopia
AbstractPURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to offer a comprehensive overview of the different PresbyLASIK approaches, which have been published in peer-reviewed journals. RECENT FINDINGS: Comprehensive search was conducted in scopus using keywords presbyLASIK, presbyopia, LASIK, corneal multifocality. We reviewed binocular uncorrected and corrected distance and near visual acuity, and loss of lines of best corrected visual acuity, for presbyopic patients among three different basic treatment modalities. SUMMARY: Additional trials and standards for reporting results for presbyopic approaches are necessary. Careful patient selection and counseling is imperative in all PresbyLASIK treatments.

Presbyopia among public senior high school teachers in the Kumasi metropolis
AbstractBACKGROUND: Presbyopia if uncorrected causes inability to see and do near work. It is unavoidable as one ages. High school teachers whose work depends much on near work need proper and adequate correction of their presbyopia to increase effectiveness and efficiency. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to determine the uptake of correction and prescription for presbyopia of presbyopic teachers of public Senior High School (S.H.S.). DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional study. METHODS: The study was conducted in 12 public S.H.S. in the Kumasi, with a total sample size of 298. Questionnaire was administered to teachers. Their visual acuity, refraction and ophthalmoscopy were done. RESULTS: The prevalence of presbyopia among the teachers was 68.1%. Out of the number examined 197(66.1%) were males and 10(33.9%) were females. Amongst the presbyopes 60 did not have presbyopic correction, representing 29.6% of the presbyopes. A total of 52 presbyopic teachers required an add of +2.00DS and this was the highest diopter of correction needed (25.6%). Among those with presbyopic correction 55.5% of them use single vision type of correction whiles the remaining 44.5% use bifocals. Out of the 48% presbyopic teachers who have had their presbyopia corrected before, 6% were not wearing their correction. CONCLUSION: The study has demonstrated a relatively higher prevalence of uncorrected presbyopia amongst teachers in public Senior High Schools in the Kumasi Metropolis of 29.6%. Among those with correction 6 % were not using their correction. Proper and adequate correction is needed by presbyopic teachers through screening to ensure their maximum performance.

AbstractIntroduction: Presbyopia and presbycusis are common disorders in aging people leading to various negative consequences, such as social problems, cognitive disorders, depression, and imbalance. The combination of vision and hearing loss has been correlated with various adverse outcomes. Regarding the adverse effect of presbyopia and presbycusis on communication skills and quality of life in individuals, this study was conducted to determine the relationship between these two sensory disorders.
