Premature ovarian failure affects roughly 1 in 100 women, defined by amenorrhea, low oestrogen, and high gonadotrophins before age 40. A 1982 case report describes a 26-year-old woman with four years of primary infertility whose cycles had been 21–25 days since menarche at age 11, with light flow and moderate dysmenorrhea; she had taken a mestranol-norethindrone oral contraceptive for four years before infertility began. That report notes the diagnosis is rarely suspected before menstruation stops entirely, and presents the case as an unusual chance to observe the condition developing over two years.
Genetic causes are well recognised, and one laboratory reports having identified several candidate genes associated with POF. A 2024 review states the aetiology and pathogenesis may involve genetic, immunological, medical, environmental, infectious, psychological, and enzyme-deficiency factors. The same review lists treatment approaches that include Western medicine, Chinese medicine, a combination of both, and interventions at hormone, cellular, surgical, and psychological levels, but provides no numerical outcomes—no response rates, no survival data, no sample sizes.
No abstract reports a drug that reverses or halts premature ovarian failure. The 2024 review is a narrative summary of progress, not a controlled trial. AbstractPremature ovarian failure (POF) is a common condition, affecting approximately 1:100 women. It is characterised by amenorrhea, hypoestrogenism, and elevated gonadotrophin levels in women under the age of 40. It is often an unexpected and distressing diagnosis, which coincides with infertility and menopausal symptoms. There is a well recognised genetic basis to the development of POF. Our laboratory has identified several candidate genes associated with POF.

The etiology and pathogenesis of premature ovarian failure may be related to genetic, immunological, medical, environmental, infectious, psychological and enzyme deficiencies. The treatment involves Western medicine, Chinese medicine, and a combination of Chinese and Western medicine, and the treatment level includes hormone level, cellular level, surgery and psychological aspect. This paper would like to review the progress of the etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of premature ovarian failure in recent years.
