Abstract• Regional iletis may be associated with ulcerative or granulomatous colitis, the diagnosis depending upon the amount of fibrosis and scarring as well as the presence of giant cell systems and epithelioid cells. Ileocolitis is a term used to indicate the presence of the combined forms, whose presenting symptoms are fever, cramps, and diarrhea. Medical treatment should be attempted in all cases, unless there are definite indications for surgical therapy such as recurrent massive hemorrhage, recurrent bouts of intestinal obstruction, or persistent fistulas.
AbstractTo the Editor:— Occasionally, patients with ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis, or ileocolitis are observed who give a family history of inflammatory bowel disease. During the past year, we have studied six individuals, representing four families with inflammatory bowel disease. Method: Chromosome studies were done by use of venous blood, according to the method of Moorhead et al, (Exp Cell Res20:613, 1960) with modifications. The chromosome number in all patients studied was 46, and the idiograms were normal. The accompanying Table describes the patients. Comment: In a recent review dealing with familial ulcerative colitis, ileitis, and ileocolitis, Kirsner and Spencer (Ann Intern Med59:133-144, 1963) reported that 91 of 1,339 patients gave evidence of similar disease in relatives.
