The Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics surveyed its members on outcomes for esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula over the five years ending January 1963. Data on 1,058 patients was received and processed by computer. The results were not easily summarised.
A 2016 review notes that esophageal atresia always requires surgical resection. Postoperative complications include recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula (rTEF). The review describes perioperative skills, latest advances, and optimal techniques for managing rTEF, and summarises the advantages, disadvantages, and indications of various endoscopic therapies. A 2025 case report describes an adult patient who developed a very-delayed-onset large tracheoesophageal fistula and near esophagocutaneous fistula after colonic interposition for esophageal atresia. The fistula was treated with serial multimodal endoscopic management using over-the-scope clips, argon plasma coagulation, and endoscopic suturing. No numbers of patients, response rates, or survival data are given.
What is still missing are prospective trials comparing endoscopic techniques, standardised outcome measures for recurrent fistula closure, and any data on long-term survival or quality of life after these interventions.
