What the evidence adds up to

Primary orbital apocrine adenocarcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm. A 61-year-old male with this diagnosis underwent right orbital exenteration, neck dissection, and adjuvant radiotherapy. The authors note that orbital exenteration is commonly performed as the primary intervention, but the role of adjuvant radiotherapy in preventing local recurrence is unclear and should be determined case by case. No survival or response data are given.

Apocrine adenocarcinoma arises mostly in apocrine-dense regions. Local recurrence and locoregional nodal metastasis are often observed, and most patients relapse at regional lymph nodes within five years. One 2020 case report describes a cutaneous apocrine adenocarcinoma that metastasised to a lymph node more than ten years after surgery, illustrating that late relapse is possible.

A 1992 case describes an 81-year-old man with an asymptomatic tumour in the right axilla for three years. Diagnosis was made on histopathological and enzyme histochemical grounds, showing decapitation secretion, PAS-positive diastase-resistant granules, and strong activity of apocrine enzymes such as acid phosphatase and beta-glucuronidase. No treatment outcome or follow-up is reported.

Primary orbital apocrine adenocarcinoma: case report and literature review

AbstractPrimary apocrine adenocarcinoma (PAA) originating from the orbit is a rare malignant neoplasm. We present the case of a 61-year-old-male with PAA of the orbit. The patient underwent a right orbital exenteration, neck dissection, and adjuvant radiotherapy. Orbital exenteration is commonly performed as the primary intervention for PAA of the orbit. The role of adjuvant radiotherapy to prevent local recurrence is unclear and may be determined on a case-by-case basis.

A case of apocrine adenocarcinoma in the axilla.

AbstractA case of apocrine adenocarcinoma is reported. The patient was a 81-year old man who had an asymptomic tumor for three years in his right axillary cavity. From the histopathological and enzyme histochemical examination of the tumor, we diagnosed this tumor as apocrine adenocarcinoma. The following points were distinct for the case; (1) Its clinical course and the location of lesion were typical. (2) Histologically, decapitation secretion was found evidently in the tumor cells that were arranging in adenoid pattern. (3) The cytoplasma of the tumor cells contained PAS-positive, diastase-resistant granules. (4) The tumor cells show strong activity of apocrine enzymes, such as acid phosphatase and beta-glucuronidase.
